On January 22, 2025, Church House in Kampala was abuzz with excitement as Equity Bank marked a major milestone, the graduation of the first cohort of its Equity Leaders Program.
This momentous event celebrated not only academic success but also the growth of the graduates into well-rounded leaders, ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
The graduates shared their journeys during the celebration, each one offering a glimpse into the profound impact the program had on their lives.
Atuyambe Shimon, a first-class degree earner, in Guidance and Counseling from Kyambogo University, spoke with pride about the life-changing experience the program has been for her. “When we joined the program on January 7, 2022, it felt like a moment that would change everything. Equity Bank provided us with more than just financial support; we gained mentorship, leadership skills, and a strong community,” she shared. “The program also taught us the value of giving back to society, which has been crucial for our development.”
Daniel Elaju, a special needs scholar who graduated from Makerere University with a first-class degree in Education, and his speech was an inspiring testament to resilience. “I am proof that disability is not inability,” he said. “Regardless of challenges, we can rise above and succeed. This is just the beginning of an even greater journey, and I’m ready to go higher.”
Birungi Sophia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Makerere University, she expressed her heartfelt thanks to Equity Bank for offering them the opportunity. “This program has opened doors and raised our profile in our communities,” she said. “We’ve been able to lead impactful projects, from supporting vulnerable children to environmental conservation, and have shown that young people can lead positive change.”
There words reflected not only their academic achievements but also their deep appreciation for the values of community, leadership, and service, instilled in them by Equity bank. Their journey through the program has been a testament to the power of mentorship and determination.
The event also featured a presentation of certificates by Gift Shoko, the Managing Director of Equity Bank, who applauded the graduates for setting the bar high for future participants. “You are the pioneers, the first fruits of this program,” he said. “Your achievements will inspire the next generation of leaders.”
As they stood proudly with their certificates, these graduates exemplified what it means to embrace both education and leadership, carrying the values of Equity Bank with them as they take their next steps into the world.
