Pastor Tom Mugerwa, the leader of the rapidly growing Mutundwe Christian Fellowship, recently paused during a prayer session and asked a very large crowd of worshippers “why are you not comfortable praying for the government?” This was during the end of year prayers Mugerwa held at his Church on Tuesday 31st December 2019 during the day before worshippers relocated to more spacious Wankulukuku stadium for the overnight part of the prayers.

Towards the end of the prayer session, Mugerwa whose coming on the pulpit was preceded by many other subordinate pastors including his wife Justine Mugerwa said: “I know many of you aren’t excited about this but I call on you that let’s pray for the government too because without God guiding them to govern properly, there will be no peace and the resultant chaos will hurt everybody including believers like you and me.”

Jokingly asking “but why do you hate the government,” Pastor Tom Mugerwa cited Jeremiah 29:7 to justify his insistence that the congregation loudly prays for the government too, a plea to which they immediately responded and prayed for government while dedicating individuals leaders to the Lord for guidance to lead his people justly as is recommended in the Bible. The scripture in Jeremiah 29:7, on which Pastor Tom Mugerwa referenced, reads as follows: Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” The idea behind this scripture was that believers should pray for general prosperity in the country, regardless of their captivity, because they stood to benefit because they lived in the same country notwithstanding their dissatisfaction towards the way it was being governed. These were God’s people in captivity of exile to whom prophet Jeremiah’s message was directed. (For comments on this story, call, text or whatsapp us on 0705579994 or email us at
