WE FEAR LANDLORDS MORE THAN COVID19, HUNGER WILL KILL US BEFORE THE VIRUS – BAZUKULU CRY OUT TO MUSEVENI
By Mulengera Reporter
In his five addresses to the nation, President Yoweri Museveni has announced a number of measures to prevent the spread of the deadly Coronavirus disease. From closure of schools and a ban on public gatherings to suspension of public transport and restrictions on markets and inland trade, the presidential directives have been getting tougher by each briefing made and new case announced.
However, Museveni’s social media followers, most of whom he likes to refer to as ‘Bazzukulu (the Luganda equivalent of grandchildren) since he is old enough (he’s 75) to be a grandpa to most of them (who are youths), still want more pronouncements, especially on rent and food.
Most of the responses to the presidential addresses arguably portend better ratings for him, with a considerable mass of followers making their requests for more measures after thanking Uganda’s longest-serving ruler for his leadership during the Covid-19 crisis so far.
FROM BAZUKULU TO MUSEVENI: WITH LOVE AND MORE REQUESTS
“We appreciate everything, Mr. President but Ka rent ako Jaja [that rent, Grandpa]… Our shops have shut down, cancel all the bills for a short period of time, rent, water bills, power.. We need to access internet as well while indoors,” wrote one of the responders.
“The poor will always suffer. Mzee [old man], your guidelines are good but be considerate on economic implications of your people. Do you think I will remain home when I have bills to clear i.e. water bill with high amounts, rent both for work and residential,” added another.
Yet another Muzukulu asked Museveni to ensure a tight rein on landlords, thus: “Thank you, Mr M7. A bout tenants, please contact your landlords and explain to them the matter. I am sure they are also watching what is going on in the country; they can’t chase someone from the house at this moment of crisis. Please landlords understand…”
MORE REPLIES TO MUSEVENI ADDRESS
“I love you so much my President, my godfather. [But] this issue of landlords! We work for individuals and so no work=no income for company, hence no salary resulting to inability to pay rent and these people are ruthless. They will throw us on the streets. If they do, I will come home. Can you allow to see your daughter on the street? Definitely NO! That aside, I have always loved you. Will kubonga nawe [vote you] pakalast as it has always been. God bless you my President wangye omurungi, my godfather!”
“You have closed down other businesses but not addressed the challenge of repayment of loans… Stress may kill us before Coronavirus.”
“We have already done what you have advised us, but [you have fixed more nails into us] by telling us to stay home. How shall we stay home where there is no food, water, drugs? We are going to die of hunger before Covid-19 kills us.”
