Owek Joyce Nabbosa Sebugwawo is renowned for religiously wearing her Gomesi. And as such it’s all she wears regardless of the function. Even when she was Mayor Rubaga Division for 10 years, the FDC founding member never came to office wearing anything else. Not even for one single day.
Those who know her and have been her contemporaries over the decades say there is no other thing that ever brings the gracefully-ageing Sebugwawo comfort apart from the Gomesi. Consistent with that characterization, Sebugwawo (who was recently made Minister of State for ICT) has donned nothing for all the cabinet meetings she has attended thus far apart from her Gomesi.
“She is the only member who comes to Cabinet wearing a Gomesi and she doesn’t seem bothered looking odd. Many of us, the young ones, look at her from a distance with a lot of admiration and the President doesn’t seem to have any problem with her dress code. She simply stands out and at first we thought this was a stranger Mzee had brought to address and induct cabinet on some cultural issues,” says one of the young female Ministers newly posted in cabinet.
“She is motherly and we like the courtesy, decorum and respect with which that lady handles herself. We actually look forward to learning a lot from her because we hear she has lived a life that is scandal-free and has always selflessly served the people.”
In a related development, in order to minimize chances of anyone recklessly removing their mask and thereby increasing chances of getting infected with Coronavirus, the business of Ministers being served any food or meals inside State House has been halted especially during cabinet days. “You can only grab a bottle of mineral water which you can take from your car or some very good distance away from other colleagues. It’s a measure meant to protect everywhere against Covid19 infections.”(For comments on this story, call, text or whatsapp us on 0705579994, 0779411734, 0200900416 or email us at mulengera2040@gmail.com).
