UPC BOSSES AKENA, WALUBIRI IN FIERCE EXCHANGE OVER PLAN TO BACK MUSEVENI’S 2021 PRESIDENTIAL BID

By Mulengera Reporter

Opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) factions have disagreed on a proposal to rally behind ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Yoweri Museveni in next year’s presidential election.

The two groups are led by Lira Municipality MP Jimmy Michael Akena and city lawyer Peter Mukidi Walubiri. While the Akena faction is reportedly comfortable supporting President Museveni’s reelection bid for a second time in a row, the Walubiri camp wants UPC to front a candidate.

One of the oldest political organizations in Uganda, the UPC last sponsored a presidential candidate in Olara Otunnu in the 2011 general elections.

On Wednesday, the Akena camp, based at Uganda House, praised President Yoweri Museveni for his efforts in women empowerment.

“It’s only fair to give credit where its due because we cannot be blind to the strides made as you can see women holding big and sensitive positions like the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga,” said Lawrence Okae, the National Chairperson of the Akena UPC faction.

But a day later, the Walubiri clique shredded the Akena camp’s commendation of Museveni’s work as one of the things “political vendors” are engaged in.

He added that Akena’s faction comprised “impostors” who are “unfortunately protected and promoted by the dictatorial regime.”

“The Akena group is an adulterated NRM version of UPC,” Walubiri told reporters at Speke Hotel in Kampala.

He added that his bloc would follow the party’s constitution to guide relevant organs in identifying a suitable presidential candidate for the 2021 election.

Meanwhile, Walubiri also threw jabs at the Museveni government for “the ad hoc and amateurish manner in which the NRM government has handled the locusts and the unprofessional and uncoordinated response to the Coronavirus threat.”
