As the saying goes, “A good name is better than riches,” and the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers Program for Results (UGIFT) has earned its place among the best. On Saturday, November 29, 2024, the program was recognized as the Government Performing Programme of the Year during the 12th Visionaries of Uganda Awards at Serena Hotel, Kampala.
Mr. Henry Musasizi proudly received the prestigious award on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development (MoFPED). The event was graced by Hon. Judith Nabakooba, representing Deputy Prime Minister Lukia Isanga Nakadama. Other key attendees included ministers Mukasa Muluuri, Wilson Mbadi, Lydia Wanyoto, Peter Lokeris, and various company representatives who were also honored.
They say, “Actions speak louder than words,” and UGIFT’s achievements tell a remarkable story. The program has significantly enhanced local government services in education, health, water, and micro-irrigation, benefiting not only Ugandans but also refugees and host communities. Over six years, fiscal transfers under UGIFT have grown from UGX 1,789 billion in 2017/18 to UGX 3,771 billion in 2023/24, reflecting an impressive 111% growth.
With 81% of its targets met and 68% of intermediate indicators achieved, UGIFT has set the bar high for other programs. As the proverb says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and UGIFT’s success proves that hard work and commitment lead to lasting impact.
