At the 12th Visionaries of Uganda Awards held on November 29, 2024, at the Serena Hotel, Minister Judith Nabakooba, representing the Deputy Prime Minister, Lukia Isanga Nakadama presided over the ceremony. Hon. Wilson Mbadi, State Minister for Trade, Industry, and Co-operatives shared a proverb-filled message encouraging Ugandans to seize an opportunity presented by the global coffee market.
Minister Mbadi highlighted that Uganda has reaped significant profits from coffee exports this season, thanks to a drought affecting Brazil, the world’s leading coffee producer. “When the elephant stumbles, the ant takes its chance,” he said, urging Ugandan farmers and traders to use this moment to shine.
He explained that the shortage of Brazilian coffee had caused global prices to rise, presenting a golden opportunity for Uganda. “Make hay while the sun shines,” he emphasized, encouraging farmers to improve production and quality so Uganda can secure a lasting position among the top coffee producers.
The minister clarified that he wished Brazil no harm but reminded Ugandans that “when your neighbor’s house is on fire, you protect yours and also gather warmth.” He prayed for Ugandan farmers to turn Brazil’s misfortune into a stepping stone for greater success.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Mbadi encouraged Ugandans to keep their eyes on the prize, ensuring that even when Brazil recovers, Uganda remains strong on the global coffee map. “The early bird catches the worm,” he concluded, urging immediate action to maximize the opportunity.
