Hassan Kisekka, another suspect in the ongoing trial of Maria Nagirinya and Ronald Kitayimbwa murder case has claimed that his life is in danger and requested to be transferred from Luzira Upper Prisons. Kisekka informed the High Court in Kampala that his co-accused, Compoliyamu Kasolo and Johnson Lubega, have threatened to kill him in prison.
Previously, Nasif Kalyango, another suspect in the case, had made similar claims of being threatened by Kasolo, who denied the allegations. Justice Isaac Muwata directed Uganda Prison Services to find a secure place to accommodate Kisekka. Additionally, Justice Muwata ruled on Kasolo’s request for Shillings 50 million to summon his witnesses.
The judge stated that Kasolo must provide accurate details about the individuals he wishes to summon, including their location, correct names, and phone numbers. Justice Muwata clarified that the responsibility of summoning witnesses lies with the deputy registrar of the court.
During the court session, the prosecution expressed concerns that the defense counsel, Julius Sserwambala, should not represent the accused due to contradicting evidence presented. The prosecution argued that it could lead to prejudice in court.
However, Sserwambala defended his position, stating that the accused have the right to choose their lawyer, and he operates based on their instructions. Justice Muwata ordered that Kalyango and Kisekka, who claimed to be threatened, be provided with a different lawyer.
Godfrey Sserwanga, the newly assigned defense lawyer for Kalyango and Kisekka, requested time to review their case files. The court adjourned the hearing to June 6 for the defense’s presentation-URN (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [whatsapp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
