The Rotary Club of Bukoto has awarded renowned neurosurgeon Dr Michael Edgar Muhumuza with their annual Vocational Award for his outstanding performance in transforming Uganda’s health sector.

Describing Dr Muhumuza as “humble” and “dedicated”, Club President Gloria Katuku praised Muhumuza for his role in the growth of the neurosurgery profession in the country.

Katuku – who will soon be succeeded by President-elect Mercy Kainobwisho, the head of the Intellectual Property Directorate at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) – noted that Muhumuza had played a pivotal role in increasing the number of neurosurgeons in Uganda by taking part in the training of students and interns pursuing careers in neurosurgery.

“He has intentionally ensured that Uganda has more specialists in neurosurgery,” added Katuku.

Dr Ken Mugisha, the former Governor of Rotary District 9211, who handed the award to Muhumuza, commended the Senior Consultant in Neurology and Neurosurgery for sensitizing communities and for working to save lives.

“Dr Muhumuza has done extensive work in communities and many have given testimonies on how he saved their lives and those of their relatives,” said Dr Mugisha.

“He has organised Neurosurgery camps and written a number of publications on the developed Neurosurgery in conjunction with the Ministry of Health.”

Before the award was handed to Muhumuza, Katuku explained that the brain surgeon was awarded for “his humility, integrity, professionalism, mentorship of young people to become neurosurgeons, and dedication to his service.”

Currently the Head of the Neurosurgery Department at the Mulago National Referral Hospital, Muhumuza has been rising through the health sector ranks since he started work as an Intern Medical Officer at Jinja Hospital. He has also worked at Kambuga and Mbale Hospitals.

Muhumuza also served as Uganda’s Country Director for the Neurosurgical Training Program of East Central and Southern Africa (NSTP-ECSA).

An accomplished author in the field of neurosurgery, Muhumuza has had his work published in international journals, including the Chinese Journal of Neurosurgery.

His manuscript titled ‘Developing Neurosurgery in Uganda’ is being considered for publication and dissemination by Uganda’s Health Ministry.

The 2019/2020 awardee went to Busoga College Mwiri and St James SS in Jinja for his secondary education; Guangxi Medical University (China), Tianjin Medical University, as well as Beijing Language Institute for higher education.
