The Catholic churches in Gulu Archdiocese will use the relics of Fr. Dr. Ambrosoli Giuseppe to celebrate holy masses. The relics were brought from Rome a month ago in preparation for the beatification of Fr. Ambrosoli, a Roman Catholic Priest and Medical doctor, who took charge of running a local dispensary in Kalongo, where he had been assigned as a parish priest in 1956.

Fr. Ambrosoli is best known as a doctor, surgeon, philanthropist, and educator in the missions in Uganda. He was famed as the “saint doctor” or “great doctor” for being compassionate and loving care for the sick and for revolutionizing the care for leprosy patients by admitting them to the same hospital as other patients instead of confining them to the often neglected and poorly managed leprosarium.

His heroic virtues were recognized by Pope Francis on December 17, 2015, as the first of several steps on the road to being named a saint. The cause was furthered in May 2019, when the medical commission instituted by the Congregation for the Cause of Saints recognized the cure of a young Ugandan woman as extraordinary and unexplainable from the clinical and scientific point of view.

It is believed that Dr. Ambrosoli extraordinarily and unexplainably cured a Kalongo woman of blood poisoning in 2008, eighteen years after his death in 1987.  Dr. Ambrosoli’s ability to heal the woman identified as Lomoki was confirmed as a miracle by Pope Francis on November 29, 2019, a step that will lead to his beatification when he will earn the title ‘blessed’.

The organizing committee for the beatification of Fr Ambrosoli says the relics will be unveiled before Christians on November 20, 2022, at Christ the King Parish in Kalongo, Agago district and thereafter, it will be used to celebrate masses by churches in the Archdiocese of Gulu.

Msgr. Mathew Odong, the Vicar General of Gulu Archdiocese and Chairperson Central Organizing Committee told URN in an interview that a relic is an object of veneration of a man who had a deep relationship with God adding that Fr. Ambrosoli`s life radiates the presence of God given his nature of loving, compassion, prayerfulness, generosity, and conforming his life to the teaching of the gospel.

Msgr. Odong noted that all priests will use the relics placed on the altar while celebrating a mass because there is nothing above holiness, a process which Fr. Ambrosoli will be granted and consequently canonized as the last step to sainthood.

Gulu Archbishop John Baptist Odama says that the beatification is a blessing from God to the Acholi sub-region, Uganda, and the world at large.  Fr. Giuseppe becomes the third blessed person in Acholi after Jildo Irwa and Daudi Okello. This is also the first beatification in Acholi as it is always done in the Vatican-URN (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [whatsapp line], 0779411734 & 0200900416 or email us at
