Government Spokesperson and Uganda Media Centre Executive Director Ofwono Opondo and his family members are living in fear after assailants raided their home in Nakago Cell, Ntawo Ward , Central Division Mukono Municipality, on Thursday night.
Ofwono Opondo was out of his home when the attack happened, and went ahead to appear on NBS Television’s Thursday night Frontline Show. Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says the thugs, two in number and dressed in casual clothes, wore face masks and brandished new pangas.
The assailants reportedly took advantage of a power blackout in the area to enter into the government spokesperson’s home through the main gate since there were no guards at the gate (that was only bolted without a padlock). Inside the house was the Media Centre boss’ wife Jane Nalukwago Opondo and their two daughters whiling away the evening by watching television in their sitting room.
Opondo’s wife has told police detectives investigating the matter that the masked assailants had moved with them to master bedroom, where they broke into wardrobes. Sifting through one of these wardrobes, the assailants landed on Nalukwago’s handbag from which they fished her Shs30,000.
That the attackers took away with the Shs30,000, a modest black Nokia phone (which was later recovered a few metres away from the house) , and didn’t harm Opondo’s wife and daughters, has left police puzzled about the motive of these thugs. Although police is treating the case as burglary and theft, it is not clear if the attackers’ intention was to steal or harm the government mouthpiece, especially given the manner in which government officials such as former Police officers Andrew Felix Kaweesi and Muhammad Kirumira, and ex-Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga were killed.
