President Yoweri Museveni has urged the People of Acholi to wage war against poverty, assuring them that his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government would never let anybody destabilize the sub region the way Joseph Kony of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) did for close to two decades.

Museveni, the National Chairman of the NRM party, made the assurance in his remarks delivered by her Personal Assistant Milly Babirye Babalanda of the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), as the head of state commissioned mobilisers that will campaign for him in Acholi sub region as he seeks reelection for another five-year term. “I can guarantee you that nobody will ever destroy the peace in Acholiland again,” he said.

The President praised the people of Acholi for exhibiting bravery by working with the Ugandan army in the fight against Kony and his LRA rebels, noting that their sacrifice, their commitment as well as their cooperation with the forces were instrumental in dealing the insurgents a blow, resulting in safety, peace and security in the region after almost 20 years. Museveni also made it clear that the NRM government would never think of punishing the Acholi for the sins committed by Kony, stressing that “Kony was bad as an individual and hurt his own kinsmen.”

The man from Rwakitura also extended his deep sympathy to the Acholi for the lives lost and the general disruption to social life during the insurgency. At the meeting, a moment of silence was observed for those who perished at the hands of Kony and his lunatic rebels.

Noting that Acholi had lost 20 of the 34 years the NRM government has been in power so far (because it had taken 20 years for the forces to fully pacify the region), Museveni called on the people to work with him and his government to “recover the lost years and surpass ordinary targets in transformation.”

“The new war is the war against poverty and it very easy to win if Acholi, a well-known energetic and passionate people can listen to our gospel of prosperity. The good thing is that you still have land. Government is helping through Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and other interventions in operation countrywide,” he said.

On development projects, the NRM boss praised the Acholi for embracing investments such as the Atiak Sugar Factory in Amuru District, whose establishment the local communities supported. He explained that with such projects, Ugandans would get jobs, locals would earn income through the sale of raw materials (like sugarcane in the case of Atiak), and government would earn revenue to extend social services to its people since these companies pay taxes.

He equally encouraged them to leverage on the elevation of Gulu to a city status to attract investors who will manufacture goods for sale to the South Sudan market. The President also called on the people to use the Elegu border point to connect to business opportunities, and utilize the good road network to promote commerce.

On politics, Museveni told the Acholi that “the opposition cannot help you at all in the new phase where you are now positioned” and urged them to vote NRM candidates because these “connect directly with decision makers so as to tap resources for your area,” after all the Acholi are well represented in the Central Government and the ruling party with the Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny Dollo, Deputy Secretary General of NRM Richard Todwong and other prominent leaders all hailing from the sub-region.
