Organizers of the NRM reunion marathon which was slated for later this week have been forced to postpone the run to next month in the heat of disagreements with some elements in the top leadership of the ruling party.
The marathon was supposed to take place this coming Sunday, 10th December 2023 in Kampala and was to attract members of different grass-root pressure groups from all around the country.
Frank Sserubiri, the Central Region NRM Coordinator announced to the press on Thursday that the marathon has been pushed to the second week of January next year, after they were frustrated by the party leadership.
Sserubiri says even though the run was greenlighted by the president himself, the party structures have up to now not released the needed funds and other essentials, such as the running kits.
“We organised the marathon which was to be launched by President Yoweri Museveni and Mama Janet as the patrons of the NRM pressure group network,” Sserubiri said.
“But we are now facing challenges because some people are fighting this arrangement. The president knows about our plans; we were supposed to get kits but we haven’t seen any.
“The fact that we are still waiting for things that the president ordered to be provided; we have decided to postpone the marathon to the second week of January. We need to get everything we asked for to be on the table.”
Sserubiri further revealed that he was shocked to hear that he was being sent only Shs 200 million out of the 500 million he requested for the run.
“We did not want, therefore, to have out people travelling long distances to come here when we can facilitate them,” he added.
The marathon according to Sserubiri is supposed to be a farewell event for President Yoweri Museveni from his supporters as he bows out in 2026.
Some of the members NRM pressure group network include Watoto was Jeshi, Mitatiina Commanders, MK Winners, and West Nile Effort for Museveni, among others. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [whatsapp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at [email protected]).
