In her capacity as the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for St. Lawrence University (SLAU), Maria Justine Tulina (late Prof Mukiibi’s daughter) has commended President Museveni and his NRM government for ushering in sustainable political stability and liberal policies that are friendly to private sector operations. “It’s those good policies that have enabled us to sustainably have in place all these well-performing academic institutions under the St. Lawrence brand,” Tulina said.

Proof the usually introverted Tulina enjoyed the ceremony

She was addressing parents, students and other stakeholders during SLAU’s 10th graduation ceremony during which over 600 students received diplomas, degrees and graduate qualifications were awarded. The colorful ceremony, for which SLAU governing Council chairman Hon Mike Sebalu saluted Tulina and other Mukiibi children for keeping high standards the founding vision bearer lived for, was presided over by Chancellor Edward Sekandi who commended the SLAU BoT, governing Council and management for prudently utilizing the NRM political stability and liberal policies “to gift our country with a comprehensive and excellent gigantic education empire” which he predicted was here to stay.

To their credit, the Mukiibi children led by Tulina and Peter Semakula ensured the graduation ceremony was pompous and full of fanfare as used to happen during Prof Mukiibi’s life time. “I’m extremely grateful for the zeal with which you have kept high standards and lived up to the vision our great founder and vision bearer had for the St. Lawrence academic institutions,” said Sebalu who unusually made a short speech. Tulina, who continues to be the invisible hand behind the sustenance of SLAU, thanked the parents for paying the school fees and elders like Sekandi, Sebalu, Dr. Sarah Nkonge and others for their relentless advice to the team running the show. There are challenges (especially relating to resource constraints like is the case with all businesses in Uganda) without a doubt but parents and students seemed unanimous the Mukiibi kids deserve kudos for continuing to soldier on to ensure the legendary educationist’s dream lives on.
