The telecommunications masts and towers which make it possible for thousands of MTN subscribers to effectively communicate in much of greater Mityana are situated or erected on Jeza hill on prime land which belongs to wealthy Mawokota South MP Yusuf Nsibambi who leased the same to ATC Towers Uganda, the disclosed agent of MTN on this issue.
The leasing period ended and, because the struggling telecommunications giant has lately not exactly been doing very well on the finances, Nsibambi hasn’t received the reasonable cooperation and understanding he anticipated. A one Rebecca, who sits at the Rwenzori Towers-based ATC/MTN offices, was designated to be the liaisons person on the Jeza Towers issue but she hasn’t been according the influential opposition MP any audience. He was given her number to resolve the issue on god time but she hasn’t been taking any of his phone calls nor responding to his whatsapp or text messages.
Nsibambi, whose rental claim is in arrears of Shs200m against ATC/MTN, has since engaged a Kampala law firm to pursue the South African telecom giant multinational on his behalf. His lawyers have since written to both MTN and ATC demanding vacant possession of the Jeza land since the lease agreement conditions have all been breached with impunity. The aggrieved Nsibambi now isn’t interested in relating with ATC/MTN anymore and wants all their masts and towers relocated and evacuated off his strategically located hilly land.
The Jeza land is located along Mityana Road and Nsibambi, as the landlord, has been appalled that MTN/ATC has continued ignoring him even after writing to them a number of times notifying them of the fact that the period for which they had paid and leased his land came to an end months ago. He wants them to pay up to Shs200m to effect lease extension of some sort or simply match out and quit.
“As the landlord, Counsel Nsibambi wants to cordon off the land and get them off so that someone else more serious can take up the land and put it to better use. It will result into MTN subscribers losing their entire connection in the Mityana area because cordoning off will mean everything being disconnected,” says a source privy to the entire dispute regarding the masts’ land on Jeza hill. “His lawyers have tried everything to amicably harmonize the situation but the ATC/MTN officials at Rwenzori Towers have turned out to be too arrogant for the sensitive offices they occupy.” (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [whatsapp line], 0779411734 & 0200900416 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
