Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has used today’s Covid19 pandemic update to rebuke a section of Ugandans that have made it a habit to harass Ministry of Health (MoH) Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine.
For months now, Dr Atwine, who is the accounting officer at MoH, has faced criticism from some people who accuse her of alleged mismanagement of Covid19 funds.
Some people were even shocked that President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni reappointed Dr Atwine the PS in the Health Ministry despite negative press reports related to accountability.
Even when the Ministry has issued a number of statements detailing expenditure of all monies received, Minister Aceng is concerned that the gang of ‘malicious’ Ugandans targeting the PS has not rested.
Just yesterday, a group of yet-to-identified people dropped a coffin near the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, with placards calling on Atwine to resign over alleged corruption. Today, Aceng labelled the demonstrators who dropped the coffin near Mulago Hospital “backward.”
“I condemn the acts of throwing coffins in the name of attacking our PS Dr Diana Atwine and other health workers. This is an act of backwardness,” said the Minister.”The PS has severally given accountability on several fora and will continue to do so. These malicious acts must stop.”
