After Bobi Wine telling Muslim leaders that he hosted at his Magere home for Iftar that he would not plead with President Yoweri Museveni to release NUP members under detention on various charges, an aide of the President has come out to dismiss the former presidential candidate’s talk as misguided.

Faruk Kirunda, the Presidential Assistant in Charge of Media Management, has said that Bobi Wine’s statement shows that he lacks understanding of how government and the legal system work. “It is not President Museveni’s job to negotiate with criminals. He is not the one who arrested them. The president has a lot of other work to do,” Kirunda said.

Kirunda added that the President can only intervene when appealed to as the fountain-of-honour to exercise his prerogative of mercy. “But that only happens when suspects have been tried and sentenced, then he can intervene. He doesn’t have the powers to release anyone before the due court process is complete.”

It should be remembered that several members of NUP including Nubian Li, Dan Magic and Eddy Mutwe are under detention in Kitalya prison since January when they were arrested on various charges related to their alleged involvement in confrontations with security in Kalangala and other places. Kirunda says he is sympathetic for those arrested but Bobi Wine is approaching the matter wrongly and therefore responsible for the suffering of his friends.

“He is making it look as if his friends are being held at ransom to make him accept certain conditions but that is a false suggestion. What he should do is look for good lawyers who will argue out their cases well so that they can be released,” Kirunda advised. “If found innocent, they will be released. There are no special conditions on them and they are not the only suspects held.” Kirunda added that the cases that the NUP members are charged with are big cases some related to the November 28 rights in which many people lost their lives.

He also said that while attending the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) summit at Kololo early this year while NUP leaders skipped, President Museveni was requested to cause the release of the suspects. “The President asked the DPP and police to look at their cases and see whether they were minor and they could be set aside. That was in the spirit of national harmony which NUP doesn’t seem interested in. It means that the president has done his part and can’t do anything else.”

Kirunda advised the Kyaddondo East MP to stop dragging Museveni’s name into issues he is not aware of. “He is using the president’s name to sow cheap politics of hate among Ugandans. We are in a new Uganda. Bobi Wine should advise his supporters to desist from engaging in criminal activities or pursue justice through established channels.”

Kirunda also said it was wrong for Bobi Wine to address such issues to clerics because their issues are religious and they shouldn’t be dragged into legal matters which they have no expertise in. “This shows that he doesn’t know what to do for redress but I have advised him,” Kirunda concluded.
