Since the year 2010, the GoU has been giving Shs3000 (just imagine how unfair life can be) to each of the health workers as daily lunch allowance. This Shs2,000 per day has been applicable to all health workers on the GoU/Public Service payroll earning at the rank of between U7 and U1. It has even been worse for those ranked under U8. Their daily lunch allowance has been stagnating at just Shs2000 since 2010.

Having seen and appreciated the injustice, and in the light of the extreme sacrifice our country’s medics have been making having to deal with patients suffering from the much dreaded Covid19, the government of Gen Museveni has improvised and found money to immediately enhance the lunch package given to each of the health workers.

And effective from 1st July (under the FY2021/2022), each of the health worker (under U7-U1) will be entitled to a daily lunch allowance of Shs15,000 up from the mere Shs3,000. Those under U8 (which is a slightly lower rank) will be entitled to a daily lunch allowance of Shs10,000 up from Shs2,000 where the medics had stagnated for the last 11 years.

Catherine Musingwire, the PS Public Service Ministry, says all accounting officers and responsible officers have been instructed to accordingly adjust to make sure whoever is entitled to this lunch allowance begins getting it effective this FY2021/2022. The MoH is required to expeditiously work with the relevant accounting officers to ensure the lists of the medics eligible to earn this daily allowance (which will be factored into the monthly remuneration) are urgently verified and authenticated.
