Uganda’s Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has appointed a team of business leaders to coordinate private sector efforts in response to the deadly Coronavirus disease through resource mobilization and awareness creation.
The team includes Vision Group CEO Robert Kabushenga and Knight Frank Uganda boss Judy Rugasira Kyanda.
“Covid19 is a battle, which we can only win if we join hands together as Ugandans. We should all be responsible and helpful to one another and collectively guard our country jealously. This is already happening. The private sector has been quietly supporting the fight enormously,” tweeted Dr Aceng Monday morning.
“Robert Kabushenga and Barbara Mulwana will represent the private sector on the strategic resource mobilization committee or any other delegated by them. God bless you all, as we join hands together in this battle.”
The team also comprises Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) Chairperson, UgaChic boss Aga Sekalala, Nation Media General Manager for Editorial Daniel Kalinaki, Makerere University Business School (Mubs) lecturer Ramathan Ggoobi, Safe Boda’s Maxime Dieudonne, and Jumia Uganda’s Ron Kawamara.
Kabushenga, who described his appointment to the team as an “honour to serve the people in such a difficult time” also revealed he was engaging an online community of CEOs to devise ways of regular workplace disinfection and reducing the number of employees accessing offices.
Uganda registered her first Covid-19 case at the weekend. A 36-year-old national who returned from a business trip in Dubai aboard Ethiopian Airlines on March 21 tested positive for the deadly disease, Minister Aceng announced Saturday night.
Sunday evening, President Yoweri Museveni said he was still pondering on the best way to deal with the public transport system in the wake of the outbreak.
“Now, the only remaining thing is public transport. That’s what I’m still struggling with in my head. If you don’t have your private means of transport, don’t use public transport. Stay at home,” advised Museveni.
“Where are you going? I’m thinking of having temperature monitors at disembarkation and embarkation points of these public means of transport. I don’t want to ban them but I’m trying to discourage you from using them.”
