Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya aka Mr Update is in more trouble after Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court issued a production warrant to Kigo Prison ordering the facility’s authorities to produce the youthful legislator in the temple of justice before which the state has slapped fresh charges against him.
Issued by Doreen Olga Karungi, the Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate, on October 13, the warrant indicates that Ssegirinya faces charges of inciting violence. Grade One Magistrate Karungi has now ordered Kigo Prison bosses to present Ssegirinya before her tomorrow October 15, 2021 at 9am without fail.
Prosecution alleges that between August and September 2020, while in Kampala, Ssegirinya made statements on his ‘Ssegirinya Muhammad Fans Page’ Facebook page with the intention of inciting the public to participate in violent activities against a section or group of Ugandans.
“I am warning those who are trying to assassinate Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu that what will happen will be forty times worse than the 1994 Rwandan genocide,” reads one of the posts prosecutors hope to use against Mr Update.
Ssegirinya, who belongs to Kyagulanyi’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party which came second in the January 2021 parliamentary and presidential elections, faces separate murder, attempted murder and terrorism charges related to his alleged involvement in a spate of killings in the Greater Masaka Area.
Ssegirinya and his Makindye West colleague Allan Ssewanyana were separately rearrested outside Kigo Prison following their release on bail on different days last month. They would be charged with murder again and sent back to prison pending the hearing of their bail applications. But reports claim that judges have been skipping their bail application hearings, further complicating their cases
Meanwhile, Ssegirinya faces other pending charges from another incident in the same court he is expected to appear tomorrow. The pending case is connected with a March 2021 protest in downtown Kampala in which the legislator was calling for the release of detained political prisoners.
