Over 10,000 residents of Bukulula and Lwabenge sub-counties as well as Kalungu Town Council will soon forget about challenges that come with lack of safe and clean water after National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) launched a water extension project that will see them access piped water.

On Monday, NWSC Managing Director Eng Dr Silver Mugisha led a team of officials and engineers from the corporation to the commissioning of the Kalungu Water Project that is expected to cost Shs2bn. Also present at the launch was Aisha Ssekindi, the State Minister for Water and Environment.

MD Eng Dr Mugisha assured the people of Bukulula, Lwabenge and Kalungu Town Council that his engineers would ensure that the project is completed in just two years, meaning that safe and clean water will be flowing in their taps sometime in 2023.

The NWSC MD further explained that the water utility will undertake several works to ensure that the water production capacity is boosted so that many more people can access clean water and stop trekking long distances to swamps and wells where the available water is not clean and water sources are most times shared with animals. He added that by improving the water production capacity in the service area, customers will be assured of a more reliable and stable supply.

Local leaders present at the event said lack of safe and clean water sources had not only exposed their families to waterborne diseases but had continued to put the lives of children and women at risk since these had to walk long distances to fetch water in far flung swallow muddy wells.

Kalungu LCV chairperson Ahmed Nyombi Mukiibi praised NWSC and Government for the project but requested Eng Dr Mugisha and Ssekindi’s Ministry of Water and Environment to extend water to other parts of the districts so that residents there can also enjoy the benefits of safe and clean water supply.

On her part, Minister Ssekindi narrated how Kalungu, whose people she represents in Parliament as District Woman MP, has had enough of the challenges that come with lack of clean and safe water, making people in rural areas envy their counterparts in towns who had the rare privilege of access, thanks to the mini water supply networks that snaked through urban centres.

The Minister saluted the NWSC team headed by MD Eng Dr Mugisha for the good job well done in extending water to Ugandans. She further assured the people of Kalungu that she was confident the NRM government would not rest until it has extended services like clean water to all Ugandan homes.(For comments on this story, call, text or whatsapp us on 0705579994, 0779411734, 0200900416 or email us at
