Monday afternoon saw Ugandan online users furiously debate Speaker Rebecca Kadaga’s reference to Prof Mathias Magoola cruising towards a solution for Ugandans to circumvent COVID-19 virus associated with Coronavirus.

Many showed excitement and others scorned the Speaker for taking things so lightly. But who is this Prof Magoola and what does he represent or stand for?

We have gathered that Magoola is politically well connected to the extent that he recently met the President with his American partner and managed to get prominent coverage for his meeting in the State-owned New Vision.

He was presented to the President as CEO for DEI Group of Companies International, a pharmaceutical company that would produce medicine products that are certified and approved by WHO and EU medicines agency. They would also produce sanitizers from alcohol.

The other information about Magoola is that his business operates on 10 acres of prime land that was controversially acquired in Matugga along Kampala-Bombo road. The acquisition was controversial in that the owner got excited when Magoola came offering Shs600m per acre and turned against other earlier buyers who had paid Shs30m per acre.

The owner offered to refund their money to give way for Magoola’s pharmaceutical business, something some of them protested by petitioning NEMA and Courts of law. NEMA tried to stand in Magoola’s way over environmental compliance concerns but caved in and let him be after realizing the man had deep political connections.

This Matugga dispute remains unresolved but Magoola remains unmoved as Ugandans are being asked to prepare to begin buying his sanitizer products in the coming weeks and months to circumvent the rampaging Coronavirus.
