As part of its plan to fully transition from hard copy to online applications, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has continued to be deliberate about expanding the range of services Ugandans can access on its e-Services portal.
They are as follows: Today, online license applications can be made for broadcasting (only FM radio for now), online data communications, as well as courier and postal services.
This is on top of the equipment type-approval and short code online services that were introduced earlier. The Commission’s e-Service portal (eservices.ucc.co.ug) offers a platform for individuals to seek UCC services from the comfort of their homes or workstations.
Previously, applications for all services had to be submitted physically, leading to unnecessary delays and a higher cost of doing business.
Besides licensing for the provision of various communications services, all communication equipment (telecommunication, broadcasting, radio communication etc) must these days be type-approved by UCC prior to importation, sale, installation and operation into Uganda.
Type-approval helps to confirm the equipment’s conformity to the relevant communication standards in a bid to protect networks, users and service quality.
In accordance with sections 2, 5 and 27 of the Uganda Communications Act 2013 and Regulation 5 of the Uganda Communications (Content) Regulations 2019, UCC is mandated to license, regulate and set standards for the provision of all communication services in Uganda. Regulation of communication services by UCC is intended to promote and safeguard the interests of consumers and operators.
