A new deal between Uganda Airlines and Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) will see drivers and bikers get discounts on air tickets as the national carrier continues to position itself as the preferred travel choice for national sports teams, companies, government ministries, departments and agencies.
On Saturday, Uganda Airlines and FMU sealed a partnership deal which officially made the national carrier the official travel partner of FMU members, at the airline’s office in the capital Kampala.
Acting Uganda Airlines CEO Jennifer Bamuturaki said the partnership was in line with government’s Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) campaign, adding that she was very certain the deal would “definitely increase mileage for Uganda Airlines with the large fan base and sportsmanship that comes with motorsport.”
Bamuturaki added that the symbiotic partnership would further boost government’s efforts to market ‘Destination Uganda.’
The Acting CEO further noted that besides Uganda Airlines becoming the airline of choice for the motorsport fraternity, the national career would get several branding opportunities at FMU’s motorsport events in Uganda and abroad.
She went on to reveal that FMU members would get a 15 per cent discount on ticket fares for their drivers and bikers participating in international events in countries the national carrier flies to. Uganda Airlines will also sponsor FMU rally drivers and bikers to participate in competitions abroad.
For his part, FMU President Dipu Ruparelia noted that the deal would help market Uganda Airlines to hundreds of thousands of motorsport enthusiasts, businessmen and travelers. Dipu said that motorsport events in Uganda attract 30,000-50,000 spectators in just one weekend while between 200,000 and 500,000 fans follow the events on social media.
“An impact study of motorsports in Uganda reveals that we are a Shs4.5bn sport every weekend we go out and have had a huge economic impact on the areas the sport visits in terms of accommodation, entertainment, hospitality and recreation, fuel and lubricants, insurance, taxes, food and beverages to mention but a few,” he added.
The deal comes as Uganda Airlines continues to intensify efforts to increase its travel routes. And this expansion is coming on the heels of the easing of travel restrictions across the world. For example, Bamuturaki announced that with effect from Monday October 04, 2021, Uganda Airlines will commence direct flights to Dubai using the Airbus A330 neo state of the art Aircraft, which is among the latest to be added to the national carrier’s Air Operator Certificate. She went on to say that international routes to London, Guangzhou and other cities were “in the pipeline.”
Concluding about the partnership with the motorsport fraternity, Bamuturaki said: “With the many tonnes of cargo the Airbus can carry, we are confident that the FMU members will benefit greatly from this partnership.” (For comments on this story, call, text or whatsapp us on 0705579994, 0779411734, 0200900416 or email us at email@example.com).
