BUKIMBIRI COUNTY BY-ELECTION: CANDIDATES PROTEST PRESENCE OF NUMBERLESS VEHICLES

By Mulengera Reporters

Two candidates in the ongoing Bukimbiri county by-election in Kisoro district are protesting the presence of numberless vehicles patrolling the constituency.

Independent candidate, Asgario Turyagyenda and his Forum for Democratic Change-FDC rival, James Owebeyi Mugyemani, say that more than 30 numberless double cabin vehicles have been patrolling the entire county since Wednesday evening.

According to Turyagyenda, they have received credible information that the numberless vehicle are being driven by Resident District Commissioners and their escorts. He says that the numberless vehicles have triggered panic among voters.

The Forum for Democratic Change-FDC candidate, James Owebeyi Mugyemani is equally perturbed by the press of the numberless vehicle. He explains that some occupants in these vehicles were sighted at Nyabaremura polling station in Rubuguri town council communicating with Electoral Commission officials.

Daniel Nayebare, the Kisoro District Electoral commission returning officer says that the commission has not yet received complaints from any of the candidates. Denis Namuwoza, the in charge of operations in Bukimbiri county confirmed to our reporter that he received complaints about the numberless vehicles on Wednesday, adding that investigations are ongoing.

He said that they had arrested four polling agents of the independents for alleged voter bribery and another for inciting violence. He however, couldn’t say whether they were for Asgario Turyagyenda or Edward Mutabazi.

Joshua Mutabazi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) party candidate pulled out of the race and crossed to the ruling NRM party. The Bukimbiri county by-election by-election stems from the court of Appeal decision to nullify the victory of Kwizera for alleged irregularities following a successful application by Owebeyi.

In his application, Owebeyi argued that although the candidate’s photos and party symbols that appeared on ballot papers were genuine, they carried different names. The ballot papers carried the names of Arthur Kazoora Atuzarirwe as the NRM flag bearer, Didas Byaruhanga Kagyinda as the FDC flag bearer, and Victor Atwiine and Donzio Kahonda Mugabe as independent candidates yet none of them were from the area-URA (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [whatsapp line], 0779411734 & 0200900416 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
