Dorothy Kyeyune Byabazaire, the Director Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (which many Ugandans simply know as Nakasero Blood Bank), has explained why the 150 blood units Managing Director Micheal Mugabi led Housing Finance Bank (HFB) employees to recently donate during a blood collection drive at City Square, means a lot for them. For the two days they camped out at the City Square, UBTS’ teams managed to collect 200 blood units of which 150 came through the HFB mobilization.
To many this may look negligible quantities but Kyeyune says its significant given the huge demand of blood in this country mostly because of accidents-related emergencies and other causes. That UBTS annually requires 340,000 as the appropriate quantity it must have stored but on average, they always stagnate at around 200,000 units-leaving a deficit demand of over 100,000 units. Kyeyune says the need for blood is daily and can be experienced anytime, anywhere in the country hence the need to Ugandans to emulate HFB’s example and always donate generously.
Micheal Mugabi, the HFB MD, explains that as a responsible corporate citizen, his bank always invests in numerous CSR initiatives and blood donation has always been prioritized because they believe it’s the modest way, they can contribute towards preserving life.
