Opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye has dismissed reports that he demanded an apology from National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine after the singer-turned-politician’s supporters continue to criticize him following the launch of his People’s Front for Transition (PFT).
Last week, at least six political parties, including Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), unveiled Dr Besigye as the national chairman of PFT, a pressure group aimed at removing President Museveni from power before the 2026 elections.
But the launch of this pressure group months after the 2021 general elections, and without main opposition NUP party subscribing to it have left many talking. Some have even predicted doom for PFT, saying that as long as Bobi Wine and his Kamwokya-based NUP are not part of the pressure group, it will collapse like previous campaigns that were put in place to oust Museveni but failed.
This Monday, Besigye and PFT officials held a press conference at Jeema Offices in Kampala where the four-time presidential candidate said he had received a message from Bobi Wine who told him he was concerned by the rate at which NUP supporters are attacking him online following the pressure group’s launch. Besigye was quoted as saying that he was surprised that although Kyagulanyi swore he had not sanctioned the attacks against him and PFT, he was yet to come out to publicly rebuke his supporters and apologize to him.
Now, Besigye has said he never told anyone that he wanted a public apology from NUP and Bobi Wine. He claimed that some members of the press and fifth columnists were part of a plot by the Museveni Government to make it appear like there was a conflict among members of change-seeking forces.
“NRM/M7 junta’s effort and hope is to foment conflict among those intent on ending the (nearly) four-decade junta. To achieve this, they employ ‘fifth columnists’ in our formations and the media. I NEVER asked for a “public APOLOGY over attacks!” tweeted Besigye. (For comments on this story, call, text or whatsapp us on 0705579994, 0779411734, 0200900416 or email us at email@example.com).
