The defectors told SG Todwong that they were tired of the growing intrigue among their leaders and that the opposition political organization did not have clear plans for their future and the destiny of Uganda. That they were disillusioned by the opposition’s failure to cause the change they wanted. They went on to say that after the opposition’s loss, they were left with no option but to join Museveni’s bus so that they could tap into the opportunities presented by government programs.
According to Jacob Henry Okello, one of the converts, all they need from NRM is for the party to always remember and appreciate people who at all costs sacrifice and mobilise for president Museveni and the party to win. Okello further argued that failure to appreciate mobilizers was the reason some were “misled by a few people who peddle lies for their selfish gains.”

Welcoming the converts on May 20, Todwong applauded them for choosing to join NRM, which he said was progressive and had a clear plan and commitment to drive them out of poverty and cause socioeconomic transformation. “We are rescuing you from bad groups. Do not join groups of people who are misleading you like NUP. The government is here to help our people get out of poverty. But if you remain in opposition you may miss out on government programs,” said Todwong, further assuring them that the ruling party has identified challenges affecting youth and that a lot was being done to sort out issues to do with unemployment and limited skills required for the job market.

Also welcoming the youths into NRM was Rosemary Seninde, the Director for Mobilisation, Recruitment and Cadre Development at the ruling party’s secretariat. Seninde advised the young people that have ditched Bobi Wine’s NUP to embrace available government programs so that they can boost their household incomes.
On his part, Emmanuel Dombo, the NRM Director of Communication, accused leaders in the opposition of dishonesty, saying they had continued to deliberately tell their constituents lies, and to mislead them instead of sensitizing and mobilizing them to embrace government development programs geared at driving people out of poverty. “The opposition leaders you vote, lie to you and go to parliament to earn salaries. I advise you to work with the government and strive to better your lives and communities,” said Dombo.
Hajat Medina Naham, the Director of Finance and Administration, told the group that the party will create channels of communication to ensure they keep in contact. Naham further assured the new concerts of assistance to get them out of poverty.
Meanwhile, on Friday, NRM Omoro County by-election candidate Andrew Ojok Oulanyah and party secretariat officials led by Dombo and Hajat Naham visited Lalogi HCIV located in Lalogi Sub County to check on a nine-month old baby who was on Thursday evening affected by teargas after police swung in action to disperse NUP leaders and supporters who were campaigning in Acet Town Council beyond the 6pm campaign deadline. Dombo, who had gone to assess the condition of the baby, said it was in a stable condition and quickly responded to treatment, thanks to the Lalogi Health Centre medical team. He also condemned “the bad politics of seeking sympathy on realizing they lack popular support.” (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [whatsapp line], 0779411734 & 0200900416 or email us at [email protected]).
