Patrick Oboi Amuriat of main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) faced the wrath of police on the second and final day of the 2021 presidential nominations.
Amuriat had it rough when police arrested him from FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi hours before his nomination and dumped him at the Kyambogo nomination centre barefooted. The ‘villager’ expressed his anger, saying police was working with the Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni regime to deny him a chance to challenge the man from Rwakitura, who has been power since 1986.
But the EC later cleared Amuriat, the man the FDC is trusting to continue with the struggle for the country’s top seat through an election after opposition strongman Dr Kizza Besigye declined to offer himself as the party’s candidate for the fourth time in a row, choosing to pursue plan B instead.
In his nomination speech, Amuriat made it clear he would not hesitate to join Besigye in rallying Ugandans to oust Museveni in an Arab Spring-like People’s Revolution if the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate is declared winner of the election scheduled for next year.
The former MP insisted Besigye had won the 2016 election with 52 per cent, adding that, with FDC’s two-front plan, it would not be business as usual in 2021. He challenged Justice Simon Byabakama and his EC to announce results that reflect the will of Ugandans or be ready to face the wrath of the population.
The villager promised to cut the size of government if elected president. Police would later escort him to his home in Najjera.
As for Kyagulanyi, his journey was characterized by delays as police faced off with his supporters at some points on his way from Magere to Kyambogo. He would later be nominated, after which he promised to increase salaries of police, army and prisons officers. On leaving Kyambogo, police picked Bobi Wine from his car, bundled him into theirs and drove him to his home in Magere, Wakiso District.
